Tonsils Removal or Regeneration

Tonsils Removal or Regeneration

Tonsils Removal or Regeneration

Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND walks us through her thought process on the subject of tonsils removal. A study from 2015 showed that tonsils removal (adenotonsillectomy) resulted in a significant decrease in the severity of ADHD symptoms such as oppositional behavior, cognitive disorders, inattention and hyperactivity. This shocking turn-around for a reportedly chronic brain condition has been attributed to better sleep. Improving sleep patterns is fast becoming an accepted tool for resolving attention issues, though the percentage of those improving after tonsillectomies was much higher than with other sleep enhancement strategies. What Are the Tonsils? The “tonsils” are a group of lymphatic tissues found at the back of the throat. Most people think of the palatine tonsils, those two only-visible-when-swollen lumps, as being “the tonsils.” However, five tissues including the adenoids, comprise “the tonsils.” In this article I call the palatine tonsils, “the tonsils” and refer to the whole system as the “tonsil tissues.” The tonsils, as components of the lymph…

EMF Dangers

EMF Dangers

EMF Dangers

by Maria Rickert Hong, CHHC, AADP Chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) puts your child’s body in a state of stress, even when resting. If you live in a city, your child’s EMF exposure is much higher. Chronic stress can wear out your child’s adrenal glands, making them more anxious, prone to temper tantrums and prone to sickness. Chronic stress also leads to chronic inflammation, a hallmark of a chronic illness. Research shows that EMF can cause changes in both the sympathetic nervous system as well as the parasympathetic nervous system. Researchers described the top 10 symptoms of EMF dangers as: Memory problems Difficulty concentrating Eye problems Sleep problems Feeling unwell Headache Dizziness Tinnitus Chronic fatigue Heart palpitations Common sources of EMF exposure are fluorescent lights, cell phones, cordless house phones, baby monitors, Wi-Fi systems, smart meters and large electric devices such as refrigerators. “Dirty electricity” from off-phase electrical systems in houses and buildings is another source of EMF. EMFs…

The Importance of Soil Microbes

The Importance of Soil Microbes

The Importance of Soil Microbes

by Maria Rickert Hong, CHHC, AADP Kids who live and work on farms have far less allergies, asthma and autoimmune disorders. Researchers theorize that this is due to exposure to a wider variety of soil microbes, both beneficial and pathogenic bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. In today’s too-clean environment, our kids lack access to these microbes that can both train the immune system how to fight and give it the tools it needs to fight. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for the normal development and function of the immune system. An unhealthy gut is a common cause of autoimmune disorders, of which I include autism and ADHD. An unhealthy gut typically means that there is some form of gut dysbiosis, which means that the bad (pathogenic) guys outweigh the good (probiotic) guys. Common causes of gut dysbiosis include antibiotics, GMO foods, low stomach acid, steroids, birth control pills, birth via C-section, lack of breastfeeding and passage from mother to…

Detoxify or Die

Detoxify or Die

by Patricia S. Lemer, M. Ed., NCC A fantastic book, Detoxify or Die by Sherry Rogers MD, certainly got my attention. A leading environmental medicine authority for over 30 years, Dr. Rogers shares her insights on the irrefutable relationship between toxins from the environment and personal health. After scaring you to death, she puts you on the track to recovery. Everyone’s Toxic Even though I had read, and was impressed by, the Environmental Working Group’s “Body Burden” report on widespread human contamination by industrial chemicals, I assumed I was fine. Yes, I have a few dental amalgams, grew up in a filthy, industrial city and bike ride behind putrid cars. What a surprise to learn that my body was a “toxic waste dump,” full of mercury and PCBs. My only symptom: extra weight, despite an excellent diet, ample exercise and “clean living.” According to Rogers, I had grown larger every year to store the toxins, rather than put them out…

Immune System and Nervous System

Immune System and Nervous System

Immune System and Nervous System

by Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND During the summer, life has gotten better for most parents of a child on the autistic spectrum or with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) who live east of the Rockies. Approximately 60% of these children experience improvements in behavior and function. When fall starts, some of these same youngsters will lose ground again, but to a lesser degree. Parents blame teachers and schools for this downturn when the real culprit may be in their own backyards. Pollen, mold and grass activate the immune system sending signals to the nervous system that alter perception and behavior. Many people are surprised to find the immune system and nervous system are linked. When Dr. Doris Rapp first documented behavior and learning problems associated with allergy exposure, doctors criticized her observations for lacking scientific basis. Now over 20 years later, researchers have discovered the chemical pathways that explain this phenomenon. During an allergic reaction, the immune system reacts aggressively to…

Holistic Dentistry

Holistic Dentistry

by Maria Rickert Hong, CHHC, AADP I am fortunate to live near the office of Dr. Mark Breiner, a holistic dentist who doesn’t use mercury, fluoride or BPA. He has been campaigning against mercury amalgams since the 1970’s. He’s written a book, “Whole-Body Dentistry:  A Complete Guide to Understanding the Impact of Dentistry on Total Health”. In it, he explains the dangers of mercury, including the electrical problems caused by them. Because they are metal, mercury fillings affect the electrical energy along that meridian. Each tooth sits on a particular acupuncture meridian, so an unhealthy tooth can affect the systems and organs related to that meridian. Before he removed my mercury fillings, he measured the voltage, current and power provided by each of them. Voltages ranged from 40-220 MV, currents from 1-4 MA, and MW x seconds from -0.01 to -0.33.  Our bodies are electrochemical in nature, and these mercury fillings throw an electrical monkey wrench into the mix. Dr. Breiner…

Why TV Is Bad for Your Child

by Susan R. Johnson, MD, behavioral and developmental pediatrician; certified Waldorf teacher My son’s birth, 6 years ago, brought home to me the frightening impact of TV.  Before TV, he played outside, examining bugs, making things with sticks and rocks, enjoying the water and sand. He seemed at peace with himself, his body, and his environment. Watching TV, he became unresponsive and glued to the set. When I turned it off he grew anxious, nervous and irritable. His play was erratic and unimaginative, his movements impulsive and uncoordinated. Why TV Is Bad for Your Child The artificial pulsed light of TV projects directly into our eyes and beyond, affecting the secretions of our neuro-endocrine system. We strain to see the fuzzy and unfocused dotted image, especially if our eyes are under 4 years old and have not fully developed visual acuity and binocularity. Watching TV weakens the very skills needed for effective reading: the ability to search out, scan, focus,…

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autism

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autism

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Autism

Mitochondrial dysfunction and autism often go hand in hand. William is a 6 year old with an autism diagnosis. He made encouraging initial gains with extensive intervention until his progress hit a plateau. A developmental specialist reassessed him noting that his muscle tone and stamina were unusually low. She recommended a metabolic specialist to rule out mitochondrial dysfunction. What Are Mitochondria? Each cell contains tiny organelles called mitochondria. The job of the mitochondria is to provide the chemical energy the cell and body needs to operate. The cell cannot use sugar or fats directly. Partially broken down fats and carbohydrates must be converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell’s main source of energy. What Is Mitochondrial Dysfucntion? Children with significant low tone may have mitochondrial dysfunction. Aggressive antibiotic use, heavy metals and pesticides can all injure the mitochondria. The DNA of the mitochondria is separate from and more fragile than the DNA found in the nucleus of the cell. Common…

Schizophrenia and Nutrition

by Patricia S. Lemer, M.Ed., NCC, M.S. Bus. A friend in Pittsburgh was astonished when I suggested that Epidemic Answers had something to offer people with schizophrenia. She treats inpatient adults who are so disabled that they cannot work. In addition to heavy medication, her clinic provides three meals a day, rich in wheat and dairy products. In this and most psychiatric facilities, pharmaceuticals are frequently the first, and sometimes the only option doctors choose to alleviate and mask difficult behaviors. I reminded my friend that autism was originally labeled “childhood schizophrenia,” and that almost no one today classifies autism spectrum disorders as “mental” illnesses. Even though The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association, still lists that diagnosis, the disease once blamed on refrigerator mothers is now recognized as having other causes. I first learned about “mental” illness as a child in Pittsburgh. My grandmother “suffered” (a word I cannot stand to this day) from…

Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Adapted from information provided by National Integrative Health Associates (NIHA) in Washington, D.C. In Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the distractible Mad Hatter runs around talking incoherently and can’t concentrate. His behavior was based on the symptoms of victims of Hatter’s Disease in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their illness came from breathing mercury vapor while they processed felt hats. Today’s primary source of mercury is not from felt, but from a substance most of us carry in our mouths: dental amalgam. Fillings have been composed of 50% mercury since 1845. Although the American Dental Association maintains that once the amalgam is set in a tooth the mercury is “fixed” and poses no threat, research from various universities claims the contrary. Many believe that mercury vapor released from amalgams is a real danger. How Can Mercury from Amalgams Get into My Body? Studies show that mercury vapor is continuously released from amalgams in measurable amounts from the moment the teeth…
