Eliminate Allergies and Sensitivities

Testing blood levels of IgE, IgG and IgA for allergies and food and chemical sensitivities and intolerances can be the first step to eliminate allergies and sensitivities. These tests are one way to know which foods, chemicals or toxic allergens need to be eliminated from your child’s diet and lifestyle.

Food journaling while doing an elimination diet is another approach to eliminating allergy symptoms.

In the case of airborne allergies, supporting the immune system, healing the gut, supporting detox pathways and organs and improving sulfation are all ways to assist the elimination of allergy symptoms.

In addition, there are a variety of natural therapies to eliminate allergies and sensitivities that you may want to consider for your child.

Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET)

NAET is a non-invasive, easy, and systematic way of permanently eliminating allergies and sensitivities that your child may have. This energy medicine treatment protocol that was developed in 1983 by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, chiropractor, licensed acupuncturist, RN and PhD, who trained practitioners all over the world.

The treatment protocol incorporates a combination of chiropractic and Chinese medicine principles that are applied through spinal manipulation, acupuncture, applied kinesiology, acupressure and nutrition.

The practitioner performing the procedure uses Muscle Response Testing (MRT) to determine and confirm the allergen which is usually in a form of a small vial. The practitioner performs the treatment protocol, and then the patient must eliminate the allergen for a period of 25 hours to completely clear it.

The principle of NAET is to bring the body back into homeostasis, which is perfect energy balance, so that the negative energy blockages from the allergens are permanently eliminated. Procedures can be repeated if the child has exceptionally high sensitivity. For further information, read Say Good-Bye to Allergy Related Autism or visit www.naet.com

Bio-energetic Sensitivity and Enzyme Therapy (BioSET)

BioSET is a non-invasive, natural therapy similar to NAET. The treatment protocols include a combination of philosophies and techniques of:

  • Functional medicine
  • Enzyme therapy
  • Homeopathy
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
  • Chiropractic care
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Integrative medicine

BioSET was developed over 25 years ago by Ellen Cutler, DC, who also trained practitioners world-wide. The therapy consists of a three-pronged approach to heal the gastrointestinal system and the immune system:

  • Detoxification
  • Enzyme therapy
  • Desensitization treatments to clear and reprogram a child’s immune response

Low-Dose Allergen (LDA) Therapy

LDA was originally called Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization (EPD) in the 1960s when it was discovered by Frantisek Popper, MD and then perfected by Leonard McKewin, MD later on.

LDA is a low-dose immunotherapy that consists of an enzyme called beta glucuronidase, which has desensitizing properties. When mixed with a small dosage of an allergen or antigen, this enzyme can stop allergy reactions by shifting the immune system from TH2 (high viral/bacterial prone allergy zone) to TH1 (strong T-cell activated immunity zone).

Special Diets

If you are not yet able to have your child work with an allergy-elimination practitioner as described above, it can be helpful to implement to implement a special diet that focuses on eliminating particular food allergens.

Examples of these diets are:

Allergy and Sensitivity Elimination Tips

Improve Food Digestion

Having your child supplement with digestive enzymes can lower immune responses to potentially allergenic foods.

Heal the Microbiome

Giving your child probiotics, prebiotics, keifers and fermented foods can help heal the microbiome. In addition, you can work with a practitioner to lower the levels in the gastrointestinal tract of:

  • Pathogenic bacteria
  • Pathogenic viruses
  • Parasites
  • Candida

Increase Healthy Fats

Healthy fats do not cause inflammation and can lower inflammation.

Examples of healthy fats are:

  • Coconut oil
  • Cod liver oil
  • Ghee
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Animal fats
  • Avocados
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

View our page on Nutrition 101 to learn more about which fats to avoid (such as trans fats and vegetable oils) and which fats to use.

Rebuild the Gut Lining

Because the gastrointestinal tract is home to most of the body’s immune system, a major key to eliminate allergies and sensitivities is to rebuild the lining of the gut with foods and supplements such as:

  • Butyrate
  • Bone broth
  • L-glutamine
  • Aloe vera
  • Coconut oil
  • Slippery elm
  • Fermented foods

Open up Detox Pathways

Outsized allergic responses can be caused by a buildup of histamine in the body, which is cleared by the liver. If the liver is clogged, it can dump out excess toxins into the lymphatic drainage system, which creates a logjam in the rest of the body and contributes to excess histamine buildup.

We recommend having your child work with a naturopath or homeopath because these practitioners understand how to support the liver and how to open up detoxification and elimination pathways. These practitioners may advise giving your child supplements such as:

  • Homeopathic organ-support remedies
  • Homeopathic drainage remedies
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC)
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
  • Alpha lipoic acid (ALA)
  • Milk thistle extract (silymarin)

Lower Histamine Reactions

Certain supplements can help to lower histamine reactions. Example of these supplements are:

  • L-histadine
  • Bioflavonoids such as quercetin
  • Vitamin C

Reduce Free-Radical Activity

Antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E can reduce free-radical activity and inflammation, thereby lowering the immune response.

Address Methylation

One of the factors affecting your child’s chronic condition may be the genetic mutation called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), which affects detoxification. Methylation also repairs DNA, controls homocysteine levels, keeps inflammation in check and recycles key antioxidants.

Methylation increases sulfation for the excretion of heavy metals and the elimination of allergies (environmental and immune). Furthermore, methylation improves the production of glutathione, which is the master antioxidant that excretes environmental toxins and pathogens out of the body.

Having normal levels of glutathione enables the body to excrete the environmental toxins efficiently.

Improve Oxygenation

Both ozone therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve oxygen levels in the body, thereby potentially lowering the body’s immune response to allergens.

Shifting the Immune System

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is an opiate blocker and anti-inflammatory that comes in a transdermal cream at a very low dose (TD-LDN) that has very little side-effects and no known toxicity.

LDN reduces inflammation by correcting the imbalance between TH1 and TH2 immune responses. When the immune system shifts into a TH2 state, it is in a more inflammatory immune zone with little oxygen and lots of bacteria, viruses and microbes. Shifting the immune system from TH2 to TH1 is much more difficult but a very effective way of changing the environment of the immune system so there are more T-cells to fight infection, bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.

LDN may be an effective way for some children with autism to reduce inflammation and improve their immune systems.
