Sick Planet, Sick People

Sick planet sick people: Our relationship to the environment has a direct and immediate impact on our health, yet modern healthcare seems to all but ignore this inconvenient truth. Our children, our “canaries in the coalmine,” are telling us to pay attention to what is in our immediate environment and what impact it might have on our health.

It is time for us to stop the escalating epidemics of chronic childhood illness and redefine the human relationship with the planet by understanding that human health is directly correlated with the condition of our surroundings.

Species Diversity

As we continue to poison the oceans and pollute our land and waterways, we destroy ecosystems all over the planet, including the inner ecosystems in our bodies. The number of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish across the globe is, on average, about half the size it was 40 years ago.

We feel the immediate impact of the loss of species diversity because when you lose diversity of microrganisms in your body, you begin to develop health conditions: allergies, autoimmunity and even cancers. When viewed through this lens, it is easy to see that we are one of the species that is under stress!

If all the things that we eat, put on our skin, and use on a daily basis are compatible and supportive of our health, then they will also be supportive of planetary health. Even serious chronic illnesses can be reversed by optimizing the things that interact with our bodies on a daily basis.

Can you imagine the planetary impact if we all just started living in ways that supported human health?
