Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Mercury Amalgam Toxicity

Adapted from information provided by National Integrative Health Associates (NIHA) in Washington, D.C. In Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the distractible Mad Hatter runs around talking incoherently and can’t concentrate. His behavior was based on the symptoms of victims of Hatter’s Disease in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their illness came from breathing mercury vapor while they processed felt hats. Today’s primary source of mercury is not from felt, but from a substance most of us carry in our mouths: dental amalgam. Fillings have been composed of 50% mercury since 1845. Although the American Dental Association maintains that once the amalgam is set in a tooth the mercury is “fixed” and poses no threat, research from various universities claims the contrary. Many believe that mercury vapor released from amalgams is a real danger. How Can Mercury from Amalgams Get into My Body? Studies show that mercury vapor is continuously released from amalgams in measurable amounts from the moment the teeth…

Understanding Heavy Metal Toxicity and Chelation

By Kelly Dorfman, M.S., L.N. Experts have long recognized heavy metal toxicity as a cause of or contributor to developmental delays, autism, ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder.  Recently mercury has replaced lead as the primary culprit because children readily accumulate high levels of mercury from mandatory immunizations. How Do We Protect Against Heavy Metal Toxicity? Resist absorption of heavy metals with a diet rich in anti-oxidants.  Both a comprehensive nutritional supplement regimen and a healthy diet are essential. In a perfect world, one avoids absorbing lead and mercury altogether by taking in adequate amounts of anti-oxidants (such as vitamin C and selenium).  Children on diets low in anti-oxidants (usually from a lack of fruits and vegetables) are much more likely to absorb poisons of all sorts. If several children are exposed to the same amount of heavy metal, the ones in the best nutritional shape will take in less and more efficiently excrete what is absorbed.  This is why injected…

Preconception: Reflections from an Autism Mom

Preconception: Reflections from an Autism Mom

Jennifer Elrod, mother of a toddler boy who is in the process of recovering from mild autistic symptoms, speech delay and gross motor delay, tells us about the importance of preconception in this blog post. As the mother of a toddler who has developmental delays, symptoms of autism, and signs of mitochondrial dysfunction, when I look back at the year before I became pregnant, I have a list of “I wish I had dones” and “I wish I had knowns”. Many of the items on those lists can probably be dismissed. But even after weeding out the less rational fears and doubts, a few things remain. These remaining items can be dismissed on the basis of “don’t feel guilty” or “move forward”. But they can’t be dismissed on logical grounds as opposed to psychological grounds. My goal in looking back is to help somebody else. I have seen the women in the online forums asking other women what they wish…

Recovery from Sensory Processing Disorder, Reflux, Asthma, Eczema

Maria Rickert Hong‘s Children: Recovered from Sensory Processing Disorder, Acid Reflux, Asthma and Eczema, and getting healthier everyday! Let me tell you about my sons’ recovery from sensory processing disorder, acid reflux, asthma and eczema. I used to wonder a long time ago if these issues were related to each other and to their developmental delays, anxiety, failure to thrive and mitochondrial dysfunction, and now I know that they are. All of these issues are related to gut dysbiosis (in their case, a system Candida infection) and toxicity.  They are both full of heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium). My older son is at the 97th percentile for heavy-metal toxicity; my younger one at the 90th. They both got it from me when I was pregnant with them.  I didn’t find out until after my older son was over 4 years old that we were all full of heavy metals. My concerns about my sons’ problems were dismissed by all…
