The Vestibular System and Auditory Language Processing

By Carol Stock Kranowitz, M.A.  Excerpted from The Out-of-Sync Child: Understanding and Coping With Sensory Integration Dysfunction The vestibular system and auditory language processing: Children with vestibular dysfunction may also have auditory language processing problems. As they research their child’s disability, many parents learn about sensory integration and the importance of the body’s vestibular system, perhaps the most basic of all the sensory systems. Initially they learn that the vestibular system coordinates body movements, maintains balance and equilibrium, and helps children develop normal muscle tone. It is not as immediately apparent, though, how the vestibular system influences auditory language processing.  However, the vestibular system plays a significant role in the development of language, so that children with vestibular dysfunction may also have auditory language processing problems. It’s important to realize that the vestibular and auditory systems work together as they process sensations of movement and sound.  These sensations are closely intertwined, because they both begin to be processed in the receptors…

ADHD Causes

Kelly Dorfman, MS, LDN, discusses ADD and ADHD causes. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), with or without hyperactivity, is a subjective diagnosis that physicians apply to a standardized cluster of behaviors and symptoms. ADD/ADHD is on the “less severe” extreme the autistic spectrum, with PDD (pervasive developmental delay) and autism on the “most severe” end. Doctors sometimes “upgrade” autism or PDD to ADD or ADHD as sensory and cognitive function improve. Identifying ADD and ADHD causes assists in determining effective treatments. Attention deficits can result when one or more of the following areas is affected. Biochemical/Nutritional Nutritional Culprits Nutrition alters brain chemistry. When nutrition is compromised, the body is more likely to absorb toxins, causing further distress. Keeping a record of your child’s nutritional intake over several days can be enlightening. Look for these commonalities: A high carbohydrate or sugary diet; Over two cups of juice or sweetened drinks per day; Limited or no vegetables- especially  green leafy ones; Picky eating….

The “R” Word: Sensory Processing Disorder Recovery

You may or may not know my personal recovery story. I have recovered my 2 sons, now ages 5 and 7, from sensory processing disorder (SPD), asthma, allergies, acid reflux and eczema with a biomedical approach, which means correcting nutritional and hormonal deficiencies, removing toxicities and correcting gut dysbiosis. Most people don’t know that sensory processing disorder recovery is possible, but my sons have recovered from it. I’m still working on failure to thrive, mitochondrial dysfunction, hypothyroidism and persistent eczema in my older son. In addition, they both had developmental delays, and my older son had severe hypotonia as a baby. I have recovered from immune dysregulation, in which I had shingles twice, the worst case of poison-ivy ever, bronchitis (which I’d never had before), constant sinus infections and constant colds that would last 3-4 weeks at a time. My older son had immune dysregulation, too, when he was younger: he would go to preschool, get sick and be out…

How to Recover a Child from Autism, ADHD, Asthma and More

by Beth Lambert I have an idea about how we can heal our children. It’s a great idea. No, it’s a fantastic idea. But it may take a little explaining and a little leap of faith. Please read to this end . . . this is really good. Are You Looking for Answers? If you are a Thinking Mom (or Dad), you have probably spent many hours and many dollars looking for answers for your children about how to recover a child from autism, ADHD, asthma and other chronic illnesses. Answers with regard to why and how your child’s health became compromised in the first place. Answers with regard to what is out of balance in them biologically, physiologically, microbially, energetically, spiritually. Answers with regard to how we, as a society, can prevent more children from being harmed. Most importantly, you want answers that help us heal those that have already been harmed (our babies). I am a mother of…

Why Is the Autism Rate Now 1 in 68 Children?

Are you scared yet? If you’re thinking of having children, you should be VERY concerned that the autism rate has gone from: 1 in 10,000 children in 1980, to 1 in 150 children in 2002, to 1 in 88 children in 2012, to 1 in 68 children in 2014. That’s almost TWO PERCENT of the pediatric population! We’re not buying that this is due to better diagnosis. Ask any teacher who’s been around for over 20 years, and he or she will tell you that, yes, children today have a far greater number of health, developmental, learning and behavioral issues than children did 20 years ago. We believe this is a profound epidemic affecting today’s children. It’s Not Just an Autism Epidemic We know that there isn’t just an epidemic of autism. There are also epidemics of PDD-NOS, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, developmental delays, mitochondrial dysfunction, asthma, allergies, autoimmune diseases and neurological, behavioral, digestive disorders. When will you wake up…

Mia: Recovery from Autism

I am releasing this story here as a means to get this story out to as many people as possible.  I am a physical therapist for 14 years, a healthcare provider; I am a husband and a dad. I do not work in pediatric physical therapy.  That particular patient population is not my clientele, and I do not plan on specializing in pediatric physical therapy in the future. I have nothing to gain from this at all except for my colleagues in health care and the doctors who refer to me to think of me as a quack or a nut. That being said, I feel that it is my moral and ethical duty to share this story to you and anyone willing to take the time to read it.  It may help them or someone that they know. My wife’s sister’s son is autistic, I had an entire pediatric internship in pediatrics dealing with developmentally delayed children, some who…

Jacob: Recovery from Aspergers

Here’s the story of my oldest son’s recovery from Aspergers. Symptoms included: Chronic explosive diarrhea from age 18 months to 6 years Multiple food allergies and chemical sensitivities, that lasted until 6th grade Candida, yeast overgrowth Facial tics Night terrors Several violent tantrums per day from about 2 ½ to 3 years old. Took up about 3 hours of our day trying to calm him down. Difficulty transitioning Sensory Integration, or SI Literal interpretation of language ADHD/ODD/Depression The major healing elements: Strict diets I designed specifically for Jacob using muscle testing to watch for food sensitivities, and very few chemicals/preservatives/artificial ingredients of any kind. Limiting his exposure to environmental toxins. Homeopathy Chiropractic Emotional healing (NET, EFT, NLP) The right supplements The belief that your child can heal. 3rd grade was the official diagnosis. Broke my heart. Broke my heart a million more times, learning about SI, and finally understanding why he was so whiny, angry about sensory issues. Learning about…

Recovery from Sensory Processing Disorder, Reflux, Asthma, Eczema

Maria Rickert Hong‘s Children: Recovered from Sensory Processing Disorder, Acid Reflux, Asthma and Eczema, and getting healthier everyday! Let me tell you about my sons’ recovery from sensory processing disorder, acid reflux, asthma and eczema. I used to wonder a long time ago if these issues were related to each other and to their developmental delays, anxiety, failure to thrive and mitochondrial dysfunction, and now I know that they are. All of these issues are related to gut dysbiosis (in their case, a system Candida infection) and toxicity.  They are both full of heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium). My older son is at the 97th percentile for heavy-metal toxicity; my younger one at the 90th. They both got it from me when I was pregnant with them.  I didn’t find out until after my older son was over 4 years old that we were all full of heavy metals. My concerns about my sons’ problems were dismissed by all…
