A traditionally trained pediatric neurologist and a parent herself, Dr. Maya encountered the limits of conventional medicine when her son suffered a severe episode of asthma on his first birthday and began a backward slide in his development.
Treatments failed to reverse his condition, so Dr. Maya embarked on a scientific investigation, discovering that food was at the root of her son’s illness, affecting his digestive system, immune system, and brain.
The solution was shockingly simple: Heal the food, heal the gut, heal the brain…and heal the child.
In this book, Dr. Maya guides us through choosing healthy foods by showing that even “healthy” foods can cause problems by causing food sensitivities and intolerances that in turn can cause chronic inflammation and symptoms. She also walks us through how to how avoid processed foods that contain artificial flavorings, dyes, preservatives, sweeteners and other unhealthful additives.
Next, she takes a Weston A. Price-based approach by advocating for pasture-raised animals and animal products as well as organic fruits, vegetables and plants. Clean water is a must.
The main gist of the book is that by getting back to traditional foods that come from non-toxic soil we can take a giant step towards improving our health of chronic health conditions. Soil (dirt) is key to this, as healthy soil contains loads of microbes that are critical to our health. Sadly, in this day and age, many people are disconnected from the earth and thus are missing these microbes.
